Don’t tag me in that photo on Facebook!

Have you been tagged in a photo you do not want on Facebook?  Well, the holidays are upon us and with that comes the holiday parties. Someone is bound to have that selfie stick lurking around the corner, waiting to capture that priceless picture that you do not want your Mom or Boss seeing on Facebook. It’s happened to all of us. We’ve all been tagged in an unflattering or inappropriate image at some point.

Don’t panic though, we will take you through first how to get rid of that unwanted tag, and then how to manage your privacy settings so it doesn’t happen again.

How do I Remove Tag from a photo?

In your web browser while logged in to Facebook, hover over the story, click  and select Remove Tag from the dropdown menu. You can then choose to remove the tag or ask the person who posted it to take it down.

You can also remove tags from multiple photos at once:

  1. Go to your activity log
  2. Click Photos in the left column
  3. Select the photos you’d like to remove a tag from
  4. Click Report/Remove Tags at the top of the page
  5. Click Untag Photos to confirm

Facebook Remove Tag

Removed tags will no longer appear on the post or photo, but the post or photo is still visible to the audience it’s shared with. People may be able to view the post or photo in places like News Feed or search results. To fully remove it from Facebook, ask the person who posted it to take it down.

What’s the Privacy Checkup and how can I find it?

You can use the Privacy Checkup to review and adjust your privacy settings to help make sure that you’re sharing with who you want. To use the Privacy Checkup:

  1. Click  at the top of any page on Facebook (ex: your homepage)
  2. Select Privacy Checkup

Facebook Privacy Checkup

The Privacy Checkup will help you review who sees your posts, your settings for apps you’ve logged into with Facebook and who can see info from your profile like your phone number and email address.

A big one for me for which apps had access to my information.  I deleted over 100 surveys, quizzes, and games from my profile.

What is Timeline review and how do I turn  it on?

Timeline review lets you choose whether posts you’re tagged in appear on your Timeline. Keep in mind that posts you’re tagged in can also appear in News Feed, search and other places on Facebook.

When people you’re not friend with tag you in a post, they automatically go to Timeline review. If you’d also like to review tags by friends, you can turn on Timeline review for tags from anyone. To turn on Timeline review:

  1. Click  at the top right of any Facebook page and select Settings
  2. In the left column, click Timeline and Tagging
  3. Look for the setting Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your Timeline? and click Edit to the far right
  4. Select Enabled from the dropdown menu

Now when someone tags you in a post and/or photo, you will get a notification to Add to Timeline.

With these few setting changes, you control what gets posted on your wall and save yourself some embarrassment. Or just don’t take that picture.
